In the study (for like the third time):

"Father, what are you saying?" Alek asked.

"You are to inherit my title, land, and money. Son, I'm saying you're next in line to inherit Austria-Hungary." Alek's father had just given him the best gift anyone could receive for their 16th birthday.

"You are saying that all this time you've had a secret scroll in a secret castle in Switzerland?"

"Yes…"

"And that people have treated mother and me badly and insulted us all this time not knowing about this… and you just let them?"

"Yes." His father said. While explaining the letter from the pope and disapproval from almost everyone else, he had remained rather stoic. The news put Alek, on the other hand, through a tumultuous range of emotions.

"Father," he sighed, "we should be getting ready. Mother's invited so many people. It would be discourteous if we didn't attend."

"Alek wait," he placed a comforting hand on his son's shoulder. "You do know what this means, don't you?"
Alek shook his head.

"You are ensured the title of Archduke. You are next in line for the title of Emperor. I am guaranteeing this."

Alek nodded his understanding, but was still confused about his father's point.

His father leaned in close and whispered with a knowing smile, "You have the potential to marry anyone you want..." Franz patted him on the shoulder, and then left the room to leave his son to ponder.
